I tell communications professionals that we can't just be writers or mouthpieces.

In a fractured digital landscape, we have to be thinkers, creators, and content placers.  We have to identify problems and opportunities. We have to know the right channels. We have to constantly be thinking about the next big social medium. We have to know the technical differences between press releases, media advisories, and pitches. We have to make videos, podcasts, and social posts. And most importantly, if we can't persuade someone to learn, do, or be something, we're useless.

WHO I AM PROFESSIONALLY:

If you want more detail, check out my LinkedIn through the social icon below. In the meantime, here are the sparks notes:

  • I've served as the senior communications professional for two major Utah organizations: the Hinckley Institute of Politics and the Salt Lake Chamber - the state's largest business association.

  • I've increased overall traditional media presence for the business community and the Hinckley Institute. While I've worked for those organizations they - or their initiatives - have been mentioned more than 500 times in major media outlets including national news outlets, such as CNN and Bloomberg

  • I write speeches, speaking notes, media advisories, press releases, op-eds, blog posts and everything in between.

  • I create multimedia, including: videos, podcasts, interactive websites, and whatever else the Adobe products let me do.

  • I love campaigns. I've led or consulted on both digital and traditional media ad campaigns for everything from political initiatives to children's books.

  • I like innovation and disruptive advertising. I ensured that one product I worked with was seen by more than 70,000 people for less than $400. This resulted in hundreds of website clicks, thousands of interactions, several speaking opportunities and one happy client.

  • I like to think about: persuasion, communications, political campaigns, effective micro-targeting, the next big media, entrepreneurship, value creation, self-esteem through work, and untapping potential.

A LITTLE PERSONAL:

I currently live in Utah with my beautiful wife, Kristen, and our pup, Pippa. When I’m not writing on my blog, you’ll find me running, reading, coaching, listening to a podcast, or thinking about digital communications.
